Afterlife

Read 1 Corinthians 15:35-38, 42-50.

In this passage, we are reminded that everlasting life is beyond anything our human minds can imagine. Often, when we have lost someone we love, we find comfort in the idea that they are in heaven doing the things they loved on earth – maybe playing golf or fishing or sitting on the porch. These are lovely thoughts and they may or may not be true, but this reading gives us a different way of looking at the afterlife. It describes heaven as a spiritual realm, rather than a physical reality.

To help illustrate this point, find some garden seeds. Hold one in your hand, noticing how small it is in your hand; how dry and dead it looks. Yet if you bury it, it will become something that looks completely different. Allow this to signify for you what happens when we die. How might this affect the way you react to death? How might this help in your moments of grief?

Today, offer a prayer of thanks for those you have loved and lost. Also pray for those who are grieving recent losses.
