Matthew, Mark, and Luke all report this moment on the mountain where Jesus is revealed in all his glory as the Son of God. As they see Jesus standing on level ground and in conversation with two heroes of the Jewish faith, the great prophets who brought a message of freedom, the disciples are shaken by what this might mean. Up to that point, they believed Jesus was there for that particular moment in time, but now they begin see that Jesus is the fulfilment of God’s unfolding plan for all time. And what should they do with this dawning awareness? Listen to Jesus.
Verse 32 is important. Peter and the others were weighed down with sleep, but because they stayed awake, they witnessed this incredible event in the life of Jesus. It seems to me that sometimes, we are weighed down to the point that we miss the revelation of Jesus. It may be that we allow ourselves to become too exhausted or maybe we are weighed down by unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves or others. Maybe we get caught up in fear or anxiety or pride or control. All of these have the potential to keep us from seeing Jesus in people or situations. All of these have the potential to prevent us from listening to him. What threatens to weigh you down to the point that you might miss a powerful spiritual event? What could you set aside to make you more awake to Jesus?
Today, make it a point to see where Jesus is revealed in your life and in the world. In prayer, ask the Spirit to help you become a better listener.
