In this psalm, we find the foundational belief that God is the one, true king who creates possibilities when there seem to be none, who creates laws to ensure that all of humankind can thrive and flourish, and who is a constant, certain presence in a world where it feels there is very little upon which we can count. These words exalt God over all other powers of this world, including the powerful forces of sin and brokenness, oppression and greed.
We, as humans, sometimes forget that promise. No matter how bad things seem to be, still it is God who ordered the universe in the first place and who actively works to bring it back into balance. No matter who or what we worship, no matter who or what we place at the center of our lives, if it is not God, we will be disappointed. God’s steadfast love and faithfulness never fails. And because of that, we can clap our hands and shout to God with loud songs of joy.
