This passage evokes all the senses. Isaiah sees this scene with God sitting on a throne, surrounded by all the trappings of royalty. He hears the seraphs singing, “Holy, holy, holy.” He smells the smoke. He both tastes and feels the pain of the burning coals. It is a dramatic, other-worldly story of being called. Most of our own stories are not nearly as exciting. Often times, our call comes through a friend or family member in need, a job opportunity, an article that grabs hold of us, or a compassionate reaction that we can’t quite explain.
What is your call story? How has God used you in the past and how is God using you now? How have you responded when being called involves being sent into unfamiliar territory? What can we learn from Isaiah’s response, “Here am I; send me”?
In your prayer time today, follow Isaiah’s pattern of naming and confessing your sin, finding forgiveness, and asking to be sent. Commit yourself to listening for God’s call on your life.
